While Stowe's book would sadly, in a major way, inspire the American Civil War according to President Lincoln, Sinclair's book would inspire President Theodore Roosevelt and the U.S. Conversely, Upton Sinclair's book entitled "The Jungle" is a book depicting the tragedy of unregulated capitalism practiced in many of the early 20th century factories in the American North. Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is an example of American Realism with its close-up depiction of the horrors of the American slave experience as practiced in the American South during the 19th century. ![]()
